Will precast box culverts be allowed that are split horizontally? I.E. there is a horizontal joint and a top and bottom section of the box.

Horizontal construction joints will not be permitted in the precast box culverts. Please refer to the Sheet 2 of the road plans, General Note D-15. Also, please refer to Section 302.03 3.(a) of the VDOT Road and Bridge Specifications which states, "Precast Box Culverts shall conform to the applicable material requirements of ASTM C1577. The design shall be a Special Design that need not conform to the reinforcing steel and geometry shown in the design tables and the appendix in ASTM C1577." Specification ASTM C1577 covers single-cell precast reinforced concrete box sections cast monolithically. As precast box sections are intended to be cast monolithically per ASTM C1577, horizontal construction joints will not be permitted in the precast box culverts.
