There is a note on sheet 1J that states, "Traffic signal timing along the detour route will be adjusted as needed to accommodate the additional traffic volume. The Contractor will monitor the traffic and make adjustment as needed." Since there is no signal scope or pay items on this project will the department consider making signal timing adjustments internally. It would be costly to include a signal sub in the bid for adjustments that are not clearly defined. Please reconsider this portion of the detour work.

The city of Harrisonburg owns the signal infrastructure on the detour route. VDOT will work with the city to adjust signal timing internally as needed on the detour route.

The roadway plans note that all excavated material is unsuitable. Can the excavated material from the center pier be used as backfill around the center pier foundation?

If the material excavated for constructing the proposed pier is suitable, conforms to Section 303 of VDOT Road and Bridge Specifications, and is approved by the Engineer, the excavated material can be used to backfill around the pier.

On Sheet 13 of the bridge plans it is required to provide diagonal bracing at the abutments. Can the department clarify the purpose of this bracing and the extent the steel needs to be braced?

The Contractor shall submit details of temporary bracing, as deemed necessary, as part of the Girder Erection Plan for the Department's review. The end diaphragms and cross-frames shown in the plans are permanent.

Sheet 2C(3) has a note on the bottom of the page indicating "Embankment material to meet requirements set for on Sheet 2 Note G6. Sheet 2 does not have a note G6, Can you clarify the requirements of the embankment material outside the 21B material required for a small portion of the project?

All regular excavation, borrow excavation and embankment material used to construct embankments for this project shall meet a minimum CBR value of 5 as determined by VTM-8, shall not include USCS CH or MH soils unless stabilized with lime (per VTM-11) or cement (per VTM-72), shall be in accordance with Section 303.04(h) of the Road and Bridge Specifications or as approved by the District Materials Engineer.
