Subject: Pavement Shoulder Widening Type: Proposal

Typical section as shown on pg. 193 identifies milling 0.5' full depth of existing asphalt and adding 1.5' shoulder for a total of 2' wide shoulder. VDOT has incorporated on past projects, milling 1' wide of existing asphalt and adding an additional 2' wide shoulder for a total of 3' wide shoulder extension. Milling the 1' wide existing asphalt allows for the correct structural tie-in for the widening extension. Also VDOT has historically identified adding a 2' wide asphalt extension to the existing edge of pavement strengthens the road edge, prevents pavement cracking, and improves the safety edge while providing a greater return on VDOT's capital investment. Please review and advise if the 3' wide shoulder extension can be incorporated in lieu of the 2' wide shoulder.

Project budget and quantities permit milling 6” of existing asphalt and constructing 2’ wide shoulder. It is advised that the Contractor complete pavement widening in accordance with the typical section provided.
