Can the department please clarify the scope of work required for the expansion joint replacements? The proposal states that the contractor is responsible for chipping out abutment and pier joints, but the plans suggest simply removing the existing joint material, cleaning the deck concrete, and installing new joint sealer, which would not require chipping out the joint.

The Contractor is responsible for Expansion Joint Preparation; see VDOT Road and Bridge Specifications for procedures. For the existing steel plate/finger joints, the Contractor is required to replace all concrete material up to the joints within the thickness limits of the new overlay. See No-Plan Assembly under Scope of Work.
