Is MH-2 a doghouse manhole? Is it permissible to cover the MH-2 excavation with steel plates if work cannot be complete3d in one night?

Yes, this is a doghouse manhole (See drainage description 4-2 on Sheet 4). The use of steel plates to cover the manhole excavation are permissible, however, these shall be approved by the Engineer prior to use.

Note 5 on Plan Sheet 1E(3) states " Restore pavement section in a manner to open traffic at the end of the night work". Is full depth stone backfill will steel plates acceptable? Please also note the UB-1 concrete encasement around the 12" water shown on shown on sheet 4A (2). In order to open the road to traffic at the end of the night, stone backfill may need to be placed prior to initial set of the concrete. Is this permissible? could the trench be cover with steel plates if backfill cannot be completed prior to 6 A.M. ?

Steel plates maybe used if the trench can’t be backfilled by the end of the work day/night. However, use of steel plates shall follow Virginia Work Area Protection Manual Section 6G.15 and be approved by the Engineer prior to use.

The work will require three independent lane closures each day / night. To expedite the closure setup, can Group 2 Channelizing devices be placed in median / shoulder rather than removing each day / night? Can roll up signs be turned away from traffic rather than removed each day / night?

These traffic control devices shall be removed at the end of each work day/night.
