Subject: Bearing Articulation Modification Type: Plan
Question Date: 7/21/2025 12:14:56 PM
According to the Bearing Articulation Modification Detail on Plan Sheet 6 as well as the Framing Plan on Sheet 8, no jacking and blocking is required to perform the Bearing Articulation Modifications. However, Special Provision Section 426.03(s) calls for jacking and blocking in addition to enlarging slots in sole plates and adjusting the bearing so that it is at the midpoint of movement at 60 degrees F. Please clarify whether the procedure in the Special Provision is correct, as it differs significantly from that which is indicated on the Plans and would result in a significant overrun on the Jacking and Blocking Pay Item.
Answer   Date: 7/22/2025 1:17:34 PM
The bearing articulation work shall be as detailed on Plan Sheet to remove existing fillet welds from washers. Existing sole plates have slots and enlarging is not needed. Sheet 11 Note 10 describes "concrete/unfinished work protection" which must "sustain vehicular loads" and not be a "traffic hazard or disruption." Please clarify the allowable "protection means" that would satisfy both of the aforementioned conditions. For example: steel road plates may be capable of sustaining the loads, but would they be considered hazardous or disruptive?

Steel plates are considered a traffic hazard or disruption on an interstate & shall not be used. The concrete must sustain vehicular loads before opening to traffic.
