Inset D on 9981-060-862 Plan Sheet 2A(2) for station 28+50 to 38+50 shows existing grade, an unlabeled section, a layer of geotextile fabric, 20" of dry riprap class A1, and 6" No. 1 aggregate. No where in the cross sections from existing grade to the proposed finish grade is it greater than 2'. In some cases it is 1 foot or less. Does the department intend for the existing ditch to be excavated to install the proposed section or geotextile placed on the existing ditch, 20" of dry riprap class A1 and 6" of No. 1? This second option would raise the proposed grade from what is indicated on the cross section. There is no indication of excavation in the cross sections. Any excavation in this area would likely be rock. Please clarify.

The intent is to have a minimum of 20” of rip rap in the existing ditch bottom separated by a geotextile fabric and then topped by 6” of #1 aggregate. No excavation is required. A plan revision will be forthcoming via addendum.

General MOT notes indicate that 11' lanes shall be required at all times. Will the department allow the contractor to narrow the lanes to 11' on I-81 NB to afford additional room in the work area for the Rockfall Drape work?
If so, will the department pay for the temporary lane marking?

The lane widths should be maintained as per the typical section shown on sheet 1H(3) and the rock drape constructed as noted in the sequence of construction on sheet 1H(2). No additional payment will be made for any lane shifts.

Typical MOT Section on Sheet IH(3) Mile Marker 105 Phase 1A / 2 shows a 4.5' wide pavement strengthening of 12" BM-25.0. There is a note indicating to roll exposed subbase twice with a steel drum roller. There is no indication of stone installation underneath this section. Phase 1B / 3 shows a 5.5' wide 2" mill and surface overlay of this previously strengthened section. The typical sections on 2A(1) and the cross sections are drawn showing 4 layers of material over the entire new pavement area. This typical section is 6" open graded aggr No. 3, 4" 21B, 10" BM-25.0, and 2" SM-9.5D. Please confirm their is no stone required underneath the shoulder strengthening done in phase 1A / 2.

Stone installation beneath the shoulder strengthening is not required. Subbase stone/material exposed after 12-inch milling of 4.5-ft wide trench should be compacted prior to placement of 12-inches of asphalt in the trench. Construction of new pavement (4 layers) depicted in typical section sheets (2A, 2A(1), 2A(2), etc.) should abut against the previously placed shoulder strengthening behind the barrier wall. The final surface should be placed over new pavement, shoulder strengthening and 1 ft into existing mainline pavement in one final operation to conceal all previous vertical joints.
