Subject: Box Culverts Type: Bid Sheet
Question Date: 8/9/2022 12:40:16 PM
In reference to the answers provided in CABB question related to the 10ft x 8ft Box Culvert Extension, can VDOT please provide Plan View and Details for the D-609 Box Culvert Extensions shown on Roadway Plan Sheet #3 and which are also listed in the Drainage Summary Sheet 2J(2) as structures 3-03 & 3-03a? Note that VDOT provided Plan View and Details for D-610, Sheet 2N(1).
Answer   Date: 8/10/2022 9:03:54 AM
The D609 10ft x 8ft box culvert is a standard concrete culvert and as plan sheet 2N(3) notes: "For additional box culvert D609 details, see Road and Bridge standard BCD-DT". For the plan view information, see road plan sheet 3. D610 is a non standard culvert so details were provided

Thank you for confirming the box culvert details come from the R&B Standards BCD-DT. However the concrete quantities provided in the Drainage Summary chart, on Sheet 2J(2), for structures 3-03 and 3-03a appear to be significantly greater than what the 1.97 CY/LF factor, on BCD-02 chart in the Standards, yields. Structure 3.03 is to be extended by 37 LF and calculates to 73 CY, vs 118 CY in the Drainage Summary. Structure 3.03a is extended by 15 LF and calculates to 30 CY, vs 204 CY. The wing wall quantities must still be added but totals will still not reach the totals in the summary. Also, if the 3-03a extension is not quite half the length of 3-03 then 204 CY cannot be correct? In addition, the reinforcing steel quantities are not proportionate to the concrete volumes stated, especially when using the 395.2 LB/LF stated on the BCD-02 chart. It appears that the total quantity for Item 0090 is closer to 360 CY. Please confirm the concrete and reinforcing steel quantities for structures 3-03 & 3-03a and adjust Item quantities accordingly.

Subject: 10ft x 8ft Box Culvert Extension Type: Bid Sheet
Question Date: 8/2/2022 4:02:31 PM
The quantity for the 10ft x 8ft double box culvert extension seems to be doubled. The 10ft x 12ft quad box extension has been modified per plan sheet 2N(2) and checks with pay quantity, but no modification is shown for structure D-609. Please confirm the 339.5CY of A4 box culvert is correct.
Answer   Date: 8/4/2022 3:42:39 PM
Structure D-609 (10x8 Double Box Culvert) has an inlet and an outlet and is a standard Double Box Culvert with no modifications. On the summary sheet, the inlet (STR 3-03) has 118 CY of A4, the outlet (STR 3-03a) has 204 CY, and the quantities provided on Sheet 2N(3) for D-609 is 17.0 CY. This is a total of 339 CY. The 10x12 Quad Box Culvert (STR 4-07) detail can be seen in Sheet 2N(1) where it only has one standard wingwall. The plan sheet 2N(2) only shows " BOX CULVERT D610 SECTION; BOX CULVERT D609 & D610 WALL PENETRATION DETAILS" same as the title block.
