What is the intended use for the impact attenuators? Could you please identify proposed locations that the attenuators should be used? Are they required or at the discretion of the contractor? If relocation is required, could you please advise how that will be paid?

The impact attenuator (pay item IMPACT ATTENUATOR SER. TYPE I) is proposed to be used in association with the temporary barrier (pay item TRAFFIC BARRIER SER. CONC. MB-7D PC) at Location 1 (EB location LCS and DMS) to protect the construction work zone. This project is a Type A Transportation Management Plan (TMP) project with the Contractor being responsible for the TMP and the traffic control plans as defined in the TMP General Notes within the plans. The Contractor shall submit the proposed TMP and traffic controls plans to the Department for approval prior to start work. Refer to Section 512.04 and 104.02 within the VDOT 2020 Road and Bridge Specification for direction on relocation payments.

Item 57104 - DYNAMIC MESSAGE SIGN TYPE 2A FULL COLOR refers to spec section 804 which applies to a 96x288 front access walk-in DMS. Per sheet 24, Sign Panel Details, the new DDMS panels are (3) small toll rate signs. Could you please confirm if this is the correct pay item that these signs will be paid under and if the signs should be bid per spec section 804?

The pay item 57104 - DYNAMIC MESSAGE SIGN TYPE 2A FULL COLOR (TRS DDMS) and quantity per sheet 14 are to be used to bid and pay for the three (3) small toll rate signs (TRS) shown on sheet 24. The new TRS DDMS panels are three small toll rate signs and specification section 804 applies. The small TRS DDMS shall be designed for 6 characters with 18” character height (7 high × 30 wide amber LED pixels on a black background). The dimensions shown on the detail in sheet 24 are estimates to account for the actual cutout of the sign, including the DDMS character height (18”), number of characters (6), and vertical and horizontal borders. Final dimensions will be determined per the DDMS manufacturer. The Contractor shall coordinate with the Department prior to the design and preparation of shop drawings for the TRS DDMS details.
