Subject: Retaining Wall Work Area Type: Plan
Question Date: 3/10/2022 3:40:46 PM
Plan Sheet 1J2 states the work area for the retaining walls is behind the existing guardrail, however, retaining wall 2 extends past the guardrail and the corner of retaining wall 1 is within inches of the guardrail but there is no plan or barrier shown to protect the traffic from the excavation. Please clarify.
Answer   Date: 3/11/2022 10:17:29 AM
Temporary barrier is not required per Figure 2 on page A-4 of the Work Area Protection Manual.

Question Date: 4/6/2022 4:54:17 PM
Although typical sections of the retaining walls from sections that do not show an issue were included in the latest revision and the previous answers claim nothing is required by spec, we respectfully disagree and politely ask that the department take another look at the RW footer corners and take into consideration the amount of traffic (48000 per 2020 estimates), the expected Accident Frequency Factor (approx. 1.1), and construction ingress/egress.
Answer   Date: 4/12/2022 9:07:37 AM
The plans will be revised to add a temporary barrier. A revision will be issued accordingly.

Question Date: 3/18/2022 10:28:25 AM
Cross section 110+75 on sheet on sheet 99 of the X-Section set shows the retaining wall footer sitting underneath the existing roadway. Construction of Retaining Wall 2 and subsequent excavation thereof suggests that it would extend past the guardrail and curb exposing the SOE and work area to vehicular traffic. Please confirm that it is VDOT's intention to complete this construction without temporary barrier protection to both the workers and traffic. It should be noted that the excavation is approximately 13' in locations.
Answer   Date: 3/25/2022 12:28:55 PM
Per the VaWAPM, pg. A-4, temporary barrier service is not required for the construction of the proposed retaining wall.
