Will the Department allow the culvert to be constructed of precast segments joined to the existing culvert with a cast-in-place collar?

The Department finds it acceptable for the Contractor to use precast sections along with a cast-in-place closure section contingent upon the precast sections and cast-in-place closure being designed in accordance with AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications 8th edition, 2017. The precast box culvert and cast-in-place closure will also have to be load rated in accordance with VDOT S&B IIM-86.3 and meet load ratings so as not to require load posting. Design calculations and load rating calculations will need to be submitted with the shop drawings for the precast sections and cast-in-place closure details for review and approval to the Engineer and must be accomplished under the hand and seal of a Professional Engineer licensed to practice engineering in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
