Subject: Cut Section Soil Classifications Type: Specifications
Question Date: 9/9/2020 10:57:33 AM
Almost all of the soils in cut sections show borings that do not meet the stated qualifications for fill. As most soils are ML, CH, and CL and the LL & PL do not meet the respective 45% & 20 or less specification, will the contractor be responsible for any manipulation of cut in road way used for fill? Or will the contractor be paid Regular Excavation for Un-Satisfactory soils to be hauled off? Then borrow to Import material back to site? As of now, the borrow quantity reflects most cut is good for fill.
Answer   Date: 9/10/2020 9:24:42 AM
The CBR and Atterberg Limits requirements given on the plan sheet note are specific to off-site borrow and not regular excavation within the project limits. The Contractor would be responsible for drying or manipulating the roadway cut soils to use for embankment construction and meet compaction requirements in accordance with the plan sheet notes and Soil Survey Report. The Specifications do include language of being able to determine soils as being unsuitable at the time of construction. Where needed, payment will be made for Regular Excavation and Borrow in accordance with the Specifications.
