Subject: Asphalt patching Type: Specifications
Question Date: 10/12/2018 3:54:32 PM
Can asphalt patching material be placed without the joint that is shown between them?
Answer   Date: 10/17/2018 10:52:56 AM
Yes, asphaltic matching material may be placed all at one time if permissible by manufacturer’s recommended installation instructions. Consult with the manufacturer’s recommended lift thicknesses for placement.

Question Date: 10/12/2018 3:53:49 PM
Is the asphalt patching material the same for the joint as well as the roadway?
Answer   Date: 10/17/2018 10:51:54 AM
Yes, asphaltic patching material is the same for joint and roadway.

Subject: Plan 257-06B Type: Plan
Question Date: 10/12/2018 3:52:57 PM
Plan 257-06B We are concerned about the irregular size of the existing joints as well as location of the existing rebar. The 6” width at the top and the 4” width at the bottom may cause problems with the saw cutting. We request making the joints wider ( maybe 8”) to get away from existing joints which will give a cleaner straight joint. We also request eliminating the “T” at the top and making the joint the same width top to bottom.
Answer   Date: 10/17/2018 10:50:21 AM
The bottom trench width needs to remain 4” wide so the 3” stainless steel bent plate will stay centered over the expansion/contraction joint. The 6”± deteriorated repair joint shown to be demolished should be removed in its entirety. If required to accomplish that, the width of the upper portion can be increased to 8” with no additional costs for extra saw cutting or extra patching material.

Subject: Ref lane closures Type: Specifications
Question Date: 10/12/2018 3:50:45 PM
Can we work in one lane on both S Island and N Island at the same time? Can we work on inside lanes both N bound and S bound at the same time? ( IE- one lane in each direction closed)
Answer   1 previous answer(s) Date: 10/17/2018 10:48:23 AM
Yes, the contractor can work in one lane (same lane) on both the South Island and North Island at the same time contingent on scheduling approval in LCAMS. Yes the contractor can work on both Northbound and Southbound lanes at the same time contingent on scheduling approval in LCAMS. It should be noted that the work at MMMBT competes with HRBT and JRB (Same Direction). It would be expected that the contractor work with Tunnel Maintenance personnel and other contractors attempting to get work done at the three facilities and be prepared to work in a different direction in some cases to allow everyone to work together.

Subject: Pipe Depth Type: Plan
Question Date: 10/4/2018 1:47:33 PM
Please provide depth and type of material of existing longitudinal pipes to be cored, or provide a copy of the as-built plans.
Answer   Date: 10/9/2018 2:04:53 PM
The existing pipe type may be fiberglass or steel. As-built plans do not exist, but record plans indicate the invert of the existing longitudinal drain is at a depth of 3 ft 2 inches from the surface

Subject: Asphaltic Patching Material Type: Specifications
Question Date: 10/3/2018 8:25:51 AM
It is my understanding that water activated material can be 3 times more expensive than other cold mix materials. The warranty claims the material will survive at least 12 months. There are cold mixes on VDOT Approved List #78 with equal warranties that are significantly lower in cost. Some have been extensively tested throughout the US, including the SHRP federal highway study. The high survivability was demonstrated. Why was this spec written to sole-source only 1 material from Approved List #78 when there are other VDOT Approved options that have demonstrated equal survivability?
Answer   Date: 10/5/2018 9:36:27 AM
The Water Activated Asphaltic Patching Material Specification defines the requirements and allowable thresholds for the referenced material. Any product that meets the performance requirements as specified will be acceptable for use on this project. The material in question is not a sole sourced product.
