The rumble strips shall be constructed to RS-1 standard for continuous groove shoulder rumble strips as covered in the 2016 Road and Bridge Standards section 304.01. Width of Trenching and Paving
Type:
Proposal
Question
Date:
6/5/2018 9:42:46 AM
Where the existing paved shoulder is 10 feet wide, is the trenching and paving width limited to 4 feet? Does the 4 foot width include the portion of the travel lane to be removed for replacement of the edge line?
Answer
Date:
6/6/2018 4:04:39 PM
Yes, in the existing 10 feet wide sections the trenching and paving width is limited to 4' shoulder width and 1' additional was calculated to remove the existing edge line pavement marking. Contractors should not be tying the shoulder into the pavement any further into the travel lane than 16 inches outside of the edge line pavement marking.

Limits of Trenching and Paving Existing Shoulder

Question

Information from pages 96-106 of the proposal indicate that Full Depth paving for the WBL starts at the Galax City limits and continues approximately 5 miles to the middle of the project while Full Depth paving for the EBL starts at Route 274 and continues approximately 5 miles to the middle of the project. During a visit to the site, we noted that existing paved shoulder conditions for the EBL may suggest that the new paved area for the EBL should be located on the Galax end of the project in approximately the same location as the WBL improvements. In addition, it appears that most of the shoulder area in both lanes that are west of Route 94 may not require trenching and paving. Could you please verify that the areas described in the proposal are the correct locations for the shoulder improvements.

The information on pages 96-106 has been revised and will be corrected in an Addendum to this proposal.
