Subject: Substructure repairs Type: Plan
Question Date: 6/15/2018 9:09:05 AM
The plans basically show no scope, limits, depth of repair etc... regarding the footings to be sounded and repaired at the pier or piers. Is this work limited to one footing and one pier or does the scope include both piers ? Is there any information or indication of the extent of the repairs ? Depth of the repair, reinforcing steel repairs, etc...
Answer   Date: 6/18/2018 10:16:22 AM
The quantities of substructure surface repair where shown in the event that minimal repairs are needed at each substructure location. Unsound concrete was not identified in earlier field investigations, but once the superstructure is removed and a more thorough sounding can be performed; the intent was to show a small amount as this is what is anticipated.

Subject: Nationwide Permit Type: Permits
Question Date: 6/15/2018 9:05:22 AM

Answer   Date: 6/15/2018 12:08:13 PM
This activity will be handled by VDOT.

Subject: VHPC concrete Type: Specifications
Question Date: 6/11/2018 2:42:59 PM
In notes of Sheet 13 §2 “Epoxy and joint fabric shall not be placed until VHPC has cured 28 days unless the Contractor tests trial patches and obtain passing results per Section 431 of the 2016 Road and Bridge Specifications”. Section 431 of the General Specifications reads “Epoxy overlay shall not be placed on hydraulic cement concrete that is less than 28 days old” and does not mention any criteria for the trial batches to have passing results. Could you detail the criteria for a test batch to obtain passing results and thus shorten the curing time for Very High Performance Concrete in the Virginia Adjacent Member Connection block-out?
Answer   Date: 6/14/2018 4:03:12 PM
Criteria shall be used per Road and Bridge specification section 431 in accordance with VTM-92.

Subject: Material Type: Plan
Question Date: 6/11/2018 2:39:41 PM
Could you detail the nature and materials to install for the longitudinal construction joint in the concrete slab overlay between stage 1 and stage 2 (Sheet 14)?
Answer   Date: 6/12/2018 10:20:50 AM
It's a cold construction joint. There is no steel tying the stages together.

Subject: As Built Drawings Type: Plan
Question Date: 6/11/2018 2:39:10 PM
The existing transverse section on Sheet 3 of the drawings seems to indicate transversal post-tension in dashed line to bind the 14 prestressed existing beams together. Do you confirm there is a transversal link between existing beams ? And if applicable, we could appreciate to have technical information concerning this link.
Answer   Date: 6/12/2018 10:20:25 AM
There are transversal connections between existing beams. See As Built Plan number 39-03A, sheet 6. A 6' long 0.5" diameter strand post tensioned to 30,000 lbs is located at mid span. Each such strand ties 2 beams together.

Question Date: 6/5/2018 10:58:42 AM
Can we get the existing bridge drawings ? thank you,
Answer   Date: 6/11/2018 3:54:13 PM
Plans have been uploaded to Falcon.

Subject: Two Structure Excavation Items Type: Bid Sheet
Question Date: 6/8/2018 8:52:50 AM
The plans and bid items both show two structure excavation items. One (item # 60120) for the superstructure at 158 cy and the other (item #69011) for the substructure at 100 cy. Based on the plans, it appears that the only excavation is going to be behind the abutment backwalls. Is this considered the substructure or superstructure structure excavation? Where is the other location?
Answer   Date: 6/11/2018 3:55:39 PM
Bid item 60120 (superstructure) is for the excavation of material behind the abutments so the abutment seats can be modified. Bid item 69011 (substructure) is for the excavation of material next to substructure footings so that concrete substructure surface repair can be performed. After work has started, the substructure will be sounded and areas in need of repair will be identified by department personnel.
