Question List
Subject: Project Type: Plan
Question Date: 4/20/2018 2:04:58 PM
Is this project considered experimental in nature? Or is this a normal routine VDOT project, governed in part by FHWA procurement regulations?
Answer   Date: 4/23/2018 10:48:24 AM
The project is NOT experimental. FHWA regulations apply.

Subject: Materials Type: Specifications
Question Date: 4/20/2018 1:32:56 PM
If only one manufacturer can be found that manufactures the FRP reinforced 10 x 10 timbers will alternate materials of equal strength and performance be allowed?
Answer   Date: 4/23/2018 3:14:44 PM
Reinforced FRP is the only material that will be acceptable.

Question Date: 4/20/2018 1:33:51 PM
If only one manufacturer of the hollow FRP tubes/piling can be found are alternate FRP type piling be allowed for bidding purposes?
Answer   Date: 4/23/2018 3:15:31 PM
The contract documents do not state that the FRP piling is to be hollow. The piling must meet the performance and material criteria as specified in the contract documents.

Subject: Safety Type: Plan
Question Date: 4/20/2018 1:17:16 PM
From a safety stand point, are there methods to determine imminent FRP tube failure that could be shared with the Contractors? Internet photos show a brittle catastrophic failure mode.
Answer   Date: 4/23/2018 3:15:48 PM
Failure modes and indications of failure shall be provided by the pile manufacturer.

Subject: Material structure Type: Plan
Question Date: 4/20/2018 1:15:10 PM
What measurement/units of damage will be used to determine structural failure of the pile during the pile drive installation? Namely, at what point is the pile considered failed structurally where it would need to be removed and replaced?
Answer   Date: 4/23/2018 3:16:30 PM
Deviations in pile driving performance such as sudden decreases in pile resistance during driving that are not correlated to boring data or other incident during driving will be considered as indication of damaged piling requiring visual inspection. Removal of piles for inspection will be at the discretion of the Department.

Question Date: 4/20/2018 1:15:47 PM
What method of measure will determine if the pile has been overstressed during pile drive installation? What equipment, either destructive or nondestructive method should be used to determine if the pile has been over stressed during handling and/or driving?? What is the over stress failure criteria? Please provide this monitoring protocol? And who pays for and is responsible for this monitoring?
Answer   Date: 4/23/2018 3:17:40 PM
The contractor or pile manufacturer shall inspect piles for damage immediately before driving. Any signs of damage shall be brought to the attention of the Engineer. Damaged piles shall not be used unless inspected by the manufacturer and certified by the manufacturer in writing that the damage does not compromise the integrity of the integrity of the pile for its intended use. The contractor shall maintain detailed pile installation records as described in Pile Driving Records submittal requirements. Piles are not loaded axially and do not require additional dynamic monitoring to determine bearing resistance. Installation monitoring to measure pile driving performance is at the discretion of the contractor and pile manufacturer and will be paid for the Contractor. Acceptance of piles will be based on performance of piles during installation, observations during installation, installation tolerances and complete driving to pile tip elevation. Production piles shall be installed using the same methods and equipment used to installed the pile splice test pile. The performance of pile driving methods will be evaluated based on test pile installation and inspection of test pile after removal.

Subject: Responsible party Type: Plan
Question Date: 4/20/2018 1:10:07 PM
What party will be responsible to determine if structural damage to the piling occurs during pile drive installation? Contractor, Manufacturer, EOR or VDOT?
Answer   Date: 4/23/2018 3:18:01 PM
The contractor shall maintain detailed pile installation records and shall identify piles that experience irregular pile driving or show signs of damage. Removal and inspection of possibly damaged piles will be at the discretion of the Engineer and VDOT.

Question Date: 4/20/2018 1:12:13 PM
What is the acceptable limit of structural damage to the pile integrity as a result of pile drive installation?
Answer   Date: 4/23/2018 3:18:22 PM
Damage to piles during driving shall be assessed by the pile manufacturer, Engineer, and VDOT. Repairs made to piles shall be based on manufacturer’s instructions.

Subject: Sheet 17 of 22 Type: Plan
Question Date: 4/18/2018 10:00:38 AM
Is there a sheet 17 of 22 in the drawings? The version we downloaded does not contain a sheet 17.
Answer   Date: 4/23/2018 10:47:54 AM
Yes there is a sheet 17 of 22. It contains Composite Fender Sections and Details.

Subject: Composite Pile Splice Specification Type: Specifications
Question Date: 4/10/2018 7:15:04 AM
Can a more accurate prediction of the induced moment at the splice location be provided?
Answer   Date: 4/11/2018 10:34:12 AM
Sorry. No. The contractor is to determine location of pile splice(s) based on their means and methods. The splice design moments shown on Sheet 5 indicate the required design moment in a particular range of elevations. The design moment ranges account for possible different moment distributions due to changing soil conditions. The pile splice will require the stated moment respective to the pile splice elevation.

Question Date: 4/13/2018 11:31:34 AM
Is there currently a known peregrine falcon nest within 600' of the work area?
Answer   Date: 4/17/2018 10:23:43 AM
There is a falcon nest box within 600' of the work zone. The box is known to be unoccupied at this time. The time of year restriction from February 15 through July 15 remains applicable should the nest box be found to be occupied.
