Subject: Permanent Sheet Pile Connection Type: Plan

The plans call for the permanent sheet pile for the 7x4 box culvert to be positively attached to the box culvert and the existing wood bulkhead and connection detail to be submitted to VDOT for approval after award. This is difficult to bid if approval comes after bid. Would VDOT consider providing a connection detail to bid?

The department is not able to supply a connection detail. The detail for this connection will be subject to the means and methods of the selected precasting firm or contractor; therefore, the Contractor or precast supplier may propose their own connection dependent on their product design.  
 
Subject: Sidewalk/Curb Replacement Type: Plan

The plans call for the sidewalks and curbs to be removed and replaced several times during the installation of the different drainage structures across Church Street, Main Street, and Buckley Hall Road. Do the sidewalks and curbs need to be poured back each time or can stone be brought to the finish grade and maintained until all work is completed with the culverts and HRSD work?

The Department and the Town is agreeable to permitting short term periods in which sidewalk gaps may be filled and maintained as compacted dense graded stone; however, work should be sequenced to avoid re-excavation of previously excavated locations and therefore minimize the sidewalks left as compacted dense graded aggregate. The Department notes that additional payment will not be provided should the contractor choose to excavate locations twice (e.g. once for vacuum sewer and once for drainage.)

Can working hours be adjusted to round the clock 2-12 hour shifts in order to get culverts across Church Street, Main Street, and Buckley Hall Road?

The boring report indicates petroleum contaminated soils.Will there be a bid item added for this?

The soil is allowed by a VDEQ/VDOT agreement to be redeposited at its source or immediate vicinity. Hauling it is not necessary and a bid item will not be added.

Will the HRSD work require shut downs for all tie-ins or will a tapping sleeve & valve be used for tie-ins?

Shut downs will be required for tie ins as a tapping sleeve & valve is not acceptable.

Is there a required depth that the permanent sheet piles need to be driven into the ground?

The Professional Engineer who completes the design for the size PZ-27 or equivalent sheet piles shall determine the design depth.

Were there any boring logs done on this project? If so, could the prospective contractors obtain a copy of them?
