Additional Rock Excavation If Footings are Lowered
Type:
Bid Sheet
Question
Date:
4/12/2017 9:25:45 AM
During the excavation and discovery of the actual elevation of the rock, the bottom of the footing elevation may be lowered to assure that all of the footing is embedded at least 12" into the rock. This could result in additional rock excavation. How will the Contractor be paid for this excavation?
Answer
Date:
4/21/2017 3:59:06 PM
After all material is removed to the elevation of the rock, VDOT will evaluate the rock to determine if it is competent rock. At that time, if any additional material is to be removed, it will be paid for a Structure Excavation.

Bridge Footings in Rock
Type:
Bid Sheet
Question
Date:
4/12/2017 9:23:33 AM
The bridge footings are to be embedded 12" into the rock but the boring logs indicate that the rock is sloped under the proposed footings. As the footings are level, that would indicate that a majority of the excavation into the rock will be over 12" and some as deep as 6'-0" (Pier 2). How will the Contractor be paid for this additional rock excavation?
Answer
Date:
4/21/2017 3:58:18 PM
After all material is removed to the elevation of the rock, VDOT will evaluate the rock to determine if it is competent rock. At that time, if any additional material is to be removed, it will be paid for as Structure Excavation.

Question
Date:
4/12/2017 9:21:18 AM
On sheet 4 of 28 of the bridge drawings, it is indicated that the traffic barrier is connected to the new bridge deck by bolts extending through the prestressed concrete slab. Is there not a possibility that during the drilling of the holes through the slab that a bolt may hit the prestressed tendons?
Answer
Date:
4/18/2017 10:57:43 AM
On similar projects, the fabricators have inserted sleeves through the prestressed slabs to allow for the full depth bolts for the traffic barrier service.
