Subject: Unreinf Conc Column Plan Sheet 9 "STAR" Note Type: Plan
Question Date: 10/20/2016 4:18:14 PM
Please take a look at how an unreinforced, free standing, 12 ft +/- tall concrete column that will have to withstand live load conditions will be able to retain the #57 fill without failure or safety risk to the contractor's personnel and travelling public. I do not think this would be allowed if it was a contractor design.
Answer   Date: 10/24/2016 4:03:44 PM
This is a good observation. This is typical detail that we use for box culverts were we count on the friction between the concrete column with the box unit, and with existing abutment stem wall. However because of the height of the column we suggest providing ½” single row of wedge anchors @ 16” o.c. with minimum 4” projection anchored to the full height of the abutment stem wall above the diversion pipes; embedded according to manufacturer specifications. Price of additional work and material mentioned above shall be included in the price of # 57 stone for both projects Rte. 850 over Bratton Creek and Rte. 850 over Kerrs Creek.
