Is it allowable to place traffic on the milled deck surface during the day?

It is acceptable to place traffic on the milled deck surface during the day, given that the milling is 2” or less in depth and that the performance planed section meets the testing requirements contained within the Supplemental Section 515 for Planing or Milling Pavement. Please also note the requirements that the Contractor maintain positive drainage for all planed surfaces. Water shall not be allowed to accumulate in the milled areas. Note that there will be no traffic allowed after shotblasting the deck surface and before placing the overlay.

What is the required length of the L6 x 8 x 1 stainless steel angles being used to anchor the concrete T-Beams (B603,B604,B607,B608)? Also, which specification or grade of stainless steel is required?

The length of the L6x8x1 shall be 6” long Type 316 stainless steel.

Inspection of work will be performed in accordance with Section 105.17 of the VDOT Road and Bridge Specifications. Testing will be performed in accordance with Section 106.06 of the VDOT Road and Bridge Specifications.

Will the Department permit General Contractors to utilize I-95 median crossovers as areas for the temporary storage of materials, equipment, etc.

Storage of Materials shall be in accordance with Section 106.08 of the VDOT Road and Bridge Specifications The Department is amenable to allowing use of median crossovers to a reasonable extent; however, median crossovers shall remain at all times traversable for the purposes of emergency services and maintenance operations. The use of medians by the contractor is at the sole discretion of the Department and will be evaluated on a case by case basis. Additional required storage space shall be provided by the contractor at his own expense.

On Drawing Sheet 22 of 26 for both bridges over Aquia Creek , Joint Closure Details, will VDOT allow the Contractor to leave in place Temporary Support Beams and Blocking/Shims once work has been completed? Or, are contractors required to remove these items?

In accordance with the “PART 2 FINAL SLAB PLACEMENT” detail on Sheet 23 of 26, the temporary support beam and blocking/shims are to be removed once the work is completed.

Are contractors allowed to perform jacking operations under traveling vehicle loads?

For Aquia Creek bridges (B605 & B606, see notes on sheet 26 of 26), traffic shall be shifted away from the beams being jacked during actual jacking. Traffic may resume normal operations after the beams have been blocked. For Ni River bridges (B603 & B604, see notes on sheet 14 of 19) and Potomac Creek bridges (B607 & B608, see notes on sheet 15 of 20), jacking is allowed under traveling vehicle loads. Transfer loads to blocks immediately after jacking.
