Subject: Safe Right Shoulder Strengthening Type: Plan
Question Date: 12/12/2014 3:04:11 PM
Is it VDOT's intent that shoulder strengthening consists of removing the existing asphalt shoulder, stone, etc. to a depth of 25" then place under drain, 12" of stone(2 lifts per spec), 8" of base asphalt(2 lifts per spec), 3" of IM asphalt and 2" of SM asphalt be done under night time lane closures? In addition, the plans show saw cutting 1' into the travel lane and removing/replacing that material at the same time. This work is proposed to be done under night time only lane closures and will require placing 6:1 wedges immediately adjacent to a 11' travel lane without a shoulder when the lane closure is not in place. Additionally, The plans do not show any cross slope corrections on the outside shoulder prior to placing traffic on the shoulder. Does VDOT believe this is a safe and cost effective method of construction?
Answer   Date: 12/15/2014 10:57:29 AM
Yes. That is correct. This installation is to occur at night, due to the need to resume normal daytime traffic flow and capacity. ~~~~~~~The 1’ of travel-lane and shoulder cross-slopes are to be constructed in accordance with the final cross-sections. Upon installation, these are to be utilized for conveyance of traffic in Stage 1.

Subject: Beam Seat Elevations Type: Plan
Question Date: 11/4/2014 11:39:08 AM
Please confirm that the beam seat elevations shown on Abut Plan and Elevation sheets are correct. When adding the girder and bearing heights to the shown beam seat elevations the top of beam elevation is the same as the Top of Slab Elevations shown on sheets 27 & 28. It appears that the deck slab and beam haunch depths were not considered.
Answer   Date: 11/5/2014 11:18:31 AM
The beam seat elevations are incorrect and will be lowered by approximately 10” at all abutments. Revision 1 plans will be issued to show new beam seat elevation, new footing elevation, updated abutment reinforcing steel schedules, revised quantities, and other associated changes.

Subject: Removal of Existing Structure Type: Plan
Question Date: 11/4/2014 11:38:13 AM
The bridge profiles on sheet 2 of 53 show the existing pier footings are to remain. The pier removal detail on sheet 8 of 53 states that the pier footings are to be removed in there entirety. Please clarify whether portions of the pier footings, that do not interfere with new construction, may be left-in-place.
Answer   Date: 11/5/2014 11:17:38 AM
The existing pier footings may remain in place provided that they are a minimum of 2’-0” below the proposed finished grade and that they do not interfere with new construction, including but not limited to the proposed piles, MSE walls, and any existing and/or proposed utilities and drainage.

Subject: Use of SIP Bridge Deck Forms Type: Specifications
Question Date: 10/31/2014 8:53:05 AM
Will the use of SIP Bridge Deck Forms be allowed in bays G4-G5 and G12-G13 where there is a longitudinal construction joint? Standard Specification section 404.03(a) indicates that the use of SIP form where a longitudinal joint exists is not allowed. We think this is meant where there is an overhang for the first phase and no closure pour. In this case; the first phase joint is directly over the girder and then an additional construction joint for phase 2 about midway in the bay then allowing for a closure pour. Please advise if the use of SIP forms in the above referenced bay will be allowed.
Answer   Date: 10/31/2014 11:09:13 AM
SIP forms will not be allowed per Road and Bridge Specifications Supplemental Specification Section 404.03(a) which indicates “Corrugated Metal Forms shall not be used to form overhangs or portions of slabs where a longitudinal joint occurs between beams or girders.”

Subject: Self-Consolidating Concrete Type: Plan
Question Date: 10/27/2014 12:19:37 PM
Please clarify the General Note related to closure pour concrete. No quantity is provided for Self-Consolidating Concrete.
Answer   Date: 10/27/2014 12:34:05 PM
The General Note on sheet 1 that currently reads “Concrete in closure pour shall be Self-Consolidating Concrete.” This note should be replaced with “Concrete in closure pour shall be High Performance Fiber Reinforced Concrete.” A quantity for High Performance Fiber Reinforced Concrete has been provided on sheet 3.
