Subject: MSE Wall Reinforcing Strap Length Type: Plan
Question Date: 9/17/2014 5:21:31 PM
Plan 291-38 Sheet 24 of 33 provides a table "MSE Wall Strap Length" and gives minimum reinforcing strip lengths as a function of wall height "H". Please provide a drawing that defines "H". Per AASHTO specifications "H" is measured from the top of leveling pad to the finished grade for roadway walls. For abutment sections "H" is commonly interpreted as the height from top of leveling pad to the top of bridge deck elevation. For this project, it is not clear how "H" is defined at abutment sections.
Answer   Date: 9/19/2014 9:32:53 AM
The retaining wall heights, including the portions that are in the proximity to the bridge abutments, are specified in Plan 291-38 sheets 21 through 23 (including sheets 22A and 22B). In the said sheets, the top and bottom of the walls, as well as the bench lines, are specified with the wall station ranges on ELEVATIONS and DEVELOPED ELEVATIONS. H is the total wall height for designing straps as specified on sheet 24 in footnote (1) of the MSE WALL STRAP LENGTH table. In the MSE WALL STRAP LENGTH table, the maximum wall heights are also specified for given wall station ranges including those for the wall portions in the proximity to the abutments. Additionally, footnote (1) has been provided in the MSE WALL STRAP LENGTH table to define the wall height (H) for the wall portions in proximity to the abutments. For example, for the retaining wall RW-B, a wall height (H) of 33 feet should be used for the wall portions in proximity to the abutments between approximate Wall Sta. 0+51 to 1+32.
