Question
Date:

On test lane 5, what is the purpose of placing 6" of new 21A stone and then excavating 4" of that new stone 2 weeks later? Also, is there a time requirement between excavation of the 4" of stone and placement of the asphalt?
Answer
Date:

Test Lane 5 currently has 6" of asphalt that needs to be fully removed to establish a similar aggregate base to Lane 6 prior to paving. To avoid inconsistencies that could affect research, Lane 5 should have 6" asphalt removed and 6" of aggregate base placed, compacted, and density verified prior to milling and paving for the 4" asphalt layers. The 2 week period is intended to provide adequate time to ensure proper, adequate, and verified density of the subbase aggregate layer prior to constructing Lanes 5 and 6 the same way at the time of paving. There is not a time limit or requirement between excavation/milling of the 4" in Lanes 5 and 6 and paving other than allowing adequate time (1 hour) for rolling of the exposed aggregate and placement of testing sensors prior to paving. It is expected that excavation/milling 4" and asphalt placement should occur in the same day. If excavation/milling of 4" and asphalt placement do not occur in the same day and the exposed subbase is allowed to sit and be saturated prior to paving, paving could be delayed until the subbase aggregate achieves an acceptable moisture content.
Question
Date:

Is the density testing of the subbase aggregate layer in test lane 5 over the two week period the responsibility of the contractor or will VDOT/VTTI be doing all of the subbase testing?
Answer
Date:

The Department will conduct nuclear gauge density readings on subbase stone in accordance with section 308.03 of the specifications.
