Note 7 on sheet 9 of 21 states that the contractor shall not jack and block more than three beams per bearing line at a time and shall not replace bearing or anchor bolts at more than three ends per bearing line at a time. In an effort to reduce the cost of jack equipment rental, will the department consider allowing all beams to be jacked and blocked 1 span at a time until all beams are blocked; replace all bearing assemblies; then jack and remove all blocks a span at a time until all blocks are removed?

Yes, abutment backwall, expansion device replacement, and deck slab closure pours will be phased. Please see the Suggested Sequence of Construction on Sheet 3.

Subject: Sole Plates Type: Specifications
Question Date: 6/5/2020 8:19:57 AM
It is assumed that the sole plates are tapered to attain the constant 0.74% gradient shown on Sheet 1. Please confirm.
Answer   Date: 6/12/2020 9:19:58 AM
Beveled sole plates are not required for grades less than 1.0%.

Question Date: 6/5/2020 8:18:55 AM
Sheet 13, it is assumed that the full sole plate must be removed not merely the area removed to core the existing anchor bolts. Is the 1/4'” jacking of the superstructure sufficient bearing replacement and welding of the sole plates as shown?
Answer   Date: 6/12/2020 9:20:55 AM
Removal of the entire sole plate is required. The Anchor Bolt Removal Detail on Sheet 13 shows an option to perform sole plate and anchor bolt replacement with ¼” allowance for jacking.

Subject: Jacking Sequence Type: Specifications
Question Date: 6/5/2020 8:18:15 AM
Sheet 9 Jacking Sequence states that bearing stiffeners are replaced prior to jacking and beam repairs. Please clarify if partial stiffener replacement not full bearing stiffener replacement is required to install new end diaphragms.
Answer   Date: 6/12/2020 9:21:37 AM
Due to the advanced corrosion and that stiffeners will support live load during blocking, stiffeners shall be replaced before jacking. All stiffener repairs will be replaced first, partial or full. The type of stiffener replacement repair depends on the beam repair. Also, see Note 2 on Sheet 12. Replacement is not required for existing stiffeners without loss.

Subject: Jacking Type: Specifications
Question Date: 6/5/2020 8:16:26 AM
Sheet 9, Note 2 states “jack beams a maximum of ¼” above finished top of beam elevation at the pier, …1/8” at the abutments.” What are the required top of beam elevations? If the intent is to only jack the superstructure ¼” this may not provide sufficient space to replace the bearings and sole plates. Please clarify.
Answer   Date: 6/12/2020 9:22:06 AM
In some locations, the beams have bowed lower. If so, the Contractor may use the additional height to perform the repairs of the sole plate, bearing, or anchor bolt. The beam heights are given on Sheet 9.

Subject: Stiffener Replacement Type: Specifications
Question Date: 6/5/2020 8:14:32 AM
The note in Section A-A Sheet 12 states that “the Contractor shall complete (stiffener replacement) prior to jacking and blocking”. The superstructure will need to be jacked to remove the bearing and damaged section of the partial beam to be replaced. Please clarify.
Answer   Date: 6/12/2020 9:22:34 AM
Due to the advanced corrosion and that stiffeners will support live load during blocking, stiffeners shall be replaced before jacking. In locations with partial beam replacement, stiffener replacement will be staged. Stage I of the stiffener replacement shall be performed first. Also, see Note 2 on Sheet 12. Replacement is not required for existing stiffeners without loss.
