Subject: Temporary Sediment Riser Pipe - 36 Type: Plan
Question Date: 6/15/2020 11:17:20 AM
The details on Sheet 1H of the plans show modifications to a SWM-1 for temporary drainage structure 1i(01)-2. Plan sheet 2D describes drainage structure 1i(01)-2 as 7.3' St'd SWM-1. Sheet 2B Estimated Quantities has a listing for 7.3 LF of Temp. Sediment Riser Pipe 36". Line item 0500 in the Proposal is 7.3 LF of Temp. Sediment Riser Pipe 36". Is line item 0500 the bid item for the temporary SWM-1? Or should there be a different bid item? Structure 1i(01)-2 needs to remain in place until the fill is placed for the construction of Structure 3-6. Can temporary structure 1i(01)-2 be abandoned in place by filling it after the permanent drainage is active?
Answer   Date: 6/18/2020 5:12:56 PM
The details provided on Plan Sheet 1H show the modification requirement to the St’d. SWM-1 in order to utilize it as a dewatering structure ( 1I(01)-2 ) for the temporary sediment basin. As construction nears completion and surrounding areas of land disturbance become vegetated/stabilized to the satisfaction of the Engineer, structure 1I(01)-2 may be removed or abandoned. A quantity for Flowable Backfill St’d. PP-1 is provided on Plan Sheet 2B that includes the abandonment of 1I(01)-2 should the Contractor choose this option. The Line Item for 7.3 LF of Temp. Sediment Riser Pipe 36” corresponds to both the Drainage Description on Plan Sheet 2D, and the quantity summarized on Plan Sheet 2B. No additional or supporting bid item is required. Structure 1I(01)-2 should remain functional until the sediment trapping ability of the temporary basin are no longer required as determined by the Engineer.

Subject: Traffic Sevice Barrier Specification Type: Specifications
Question Date: 6/12/2020 12:06:17 PM
The proposal for the project includes Line 0610 Traffic Service Barrier Concrete as a bid item. Sheet 1J(2) of the plans has a typical section that shows the use of a Precast Traffic Barrier Service Concrete (Double Face) (MB-11A). Drawing MB-11A Sheet 3 of 3 of the 2016 Road and Bridge Standards shows a 20' long VDOT Standard MB-11A with Loop and Pin connections at the end of the Barrier. A supplier advised me that VDOT does allow them to sell the loop and pin connection system now. Please confirm that the MB-11A staked installation is the correct one and if the pin and loop connection system shown in the MB-11A Standard Drawing can be purchased from a manufacturer.
Answer   Date: 6/16/2020 1:22:51 PM
Temporary Concrete Barrier standard MB-11A that was manufactured prior to December 31 2019 may be used for the useful life of the barrier in accordance with IIM 259. The sunset date has not changed and NCHRP 350 temporary concrete barrier must have been manufactured prior to 2020. Temporary Concrete Barrier manufactured after December 31, 2019 shall be crash tested to MASH 2016 criteria and be approved by VDOT. http://www.virginiadot.org/business/resources/LocDes/IIM/IIM259.pdf The current VDOT Provisionally Approved MASH Products list may be found at the following link for temporary barriers that have been approved for use as MASH compliant temporary concrete barrier. http://www.virginiadot.org/business/locdes/nchrp350-index.asp http://www.virginiadot.org/business/resources/LocDes/VDOT_Provisionally_Approved_MASH_Products.pdf
